"In a year the BSYW team reach and teach approximately 50,000 children, what an amazing privilege to share the love of Jesus with these young people."

Sue Richards, BSYW Director

Our Mission

BSYW is an interdenominational Christian charity working in local schools across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, taking assemblies, lessons, clubs and workshops. Our mission statement is from Psalm 78:4 'We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord' and that's what we do; we tell children about God and His love for them.

At present, 75% of UK children have never set foot inside a church - let alone go to Sunday School - and for many the only Jesus they know is a swear word. We can no longer presume that children have heard the stories about Creation, Noah and his ark, or Jonah and the whale. So through our assemblies, clubs and lessons we tell children about Jesus and the stories in the Bible, about what it means to be a Christian and about the Bible as God's Word to us. We share our personal experiences of prayer, worship and church life.

At BSYW we have the great honour and privilege of telling thousands of children each term what God is like, that God is love and that He loves them unconditionally, because they are unique and special to Him.

Our Story

Since the very beginning in 1989 the mission of BSYW has been to share the love of Jesus with the children and teenagers of Blackpool. At that time we were working under the banner of Teen Challenge. Teen Challenge was founded in 1958 by David Wilkerson in New York. You can read his story in the book, 'The Cross and the Switchblade'.

In 1970 they started working in the UK going out onto the streets and into schools with the Gospel message, and that's what we became part of here in Blackpool. In 1994 Teen Challenge opened its first residential centre and channelled their resources into drug rehabilitation so to continue the work into schools, Blackpool Schools and Youth Work (BSYW) was born.

Gradually our net widened to cover not just Blackpool, but Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Over Wyre, St Anne's and Lytham. We were visiting primary and secondary schools taking Christian assemblies, RE lessons and holiday clubs. The vision has always been that together with local churches we will 'Tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord' (Psalm 78:4).

Our Team

The BSYW team is made up of individuals from churches across Blackpool, the Fylde and Wyre. Each volunteer regularly gives their time to visit schools helping to deliver our program of assemblies, after-school clubs, lessons and workshops. Without their support the work of BSYW could not continue. As a christian charity we represent our local churches; working together to provide hundreds of children every week with a better understanding of the bible and the christian faith.
